Abbott’s MitraClip™ device can be used to stop mitral valve regurgitation. In a healthy heart, freshly oxygenated blood flows one way through the heart and the mitral valve closes afterward. However, if the mitral valve doesn’t close properly, backflow occurs. If left untreated, this may cause heart failure and death. Surgery is usually used to repair mitral valve defects; however, this may not be feasible for all patients. MitraClip™ is a minimally invasive method of repairing the mitral valve. The clip is positioned over the defective valve enabling it to close completely and stop backflow.
