Concluding My Internship Experience | Carmen Garcia Sebego
This summer, Carmen Garcia Sebego joined our Client Services team, completing a three-month summer internship. Carmen is currently studying for her BSc in Biochemistry with Management at Imperial College London and has joined us during her university summer break to gain industry experience and learn a variety of new professional skills. As an intern at Random42, she combined her interests in life sciences and business to help support our team.
Carmen’s studies have so far covered a range of topics from Cell Biology to Disease Ecology and Epidemiology. Her dissertation outlined a research program to uncover the biological roles of glycosylation in adaptive immunity. Following her internship at Random42, Carmen will complete her joint honours degree at Imperial College Business School.
In this article, Carmen reflects on her time working with us here at Random42…
In June 2023, I joined Random42 as an intern within the Client Services team. In the past three months, I have been immersed in the world of medical animation, which has given me a new perspective on how science communication can be used to positively impact healthcare.
Throughout my time at Random42, I have gained experience in all stages of new business opportunities and existing client relationship management, from joining capabilities calls with prospective clients, to developing proposals for new and existing business . Working with the client services team and putting my scientific knowledge into practice has been so rewarding. One of my favourite tasks was assembling project examples and case studies to share with prospective and existing clients. I was fascinated to see how a range of scientific concepts were brought to life by animation and most importantly how the animations were tailored to the different needs of key stakeholders. It was always exciting to come across a video that illustrated drugs or diseases that I had studied during my biochemistry degree and see just how much this form of storytelling facilitates understanding. I have really enjoyed contributing to the sales of a product that I truly believe in – animations that help get pharmaceuticals to the market and improve patient’s lives.
I have also gained an appreciation for the behind-the-scenes work that goes into running a successful business, including managing databases and records and communicating with team members. These skills will be invaluable for my return to Imperial College Business School next year, where I will pursue a year in Management and my future career.
On the marketing side, the development of Random42’s new website shaped the course of my internship. This was a unique opportunity to contribute to the company’s digital presence. Being a part of this journey meant collaborating with the marketing communications team and web developers, where I gained insights into the technical details and challenges of crafting a seamless online platform. Aside from participating in website development, I was also trusted to write articles for the website. This was an exciting process, starting with using my creativity and research skills and then incorporating Search Engine Optimization techniques to help with search engine rankings. Overall, I gained valuable experience in digital communication, a skill set I am eager to carry forward in my career journey.
Besides my Sales and Marketing functions within my internship, there are many other areas of my experience that were enriching. A true highlight of working at Random42 is the culture and community. Upon my arrival, I was immediately welcomed by the many women in STEM in the Sales and Marketing department. I was also warmly welcomed by the wider team consisting of scientists, artists, animators, and programmers- both in the office and during out-of-office sports activities. As I look back at my time at Random42, it is not only the skills that I gained, but also the connections that have made this internship such a memorable experience.
I would like to thank Random42 for this amazing internship opportunity. I feel very fortunate to have been mentored by such kind and talented people. Next, I will be returning to university to do my year in management before moving forward in my career.
