Von Willebrand Disease in VR
Virtual Reality
Educational virtual reality (VR) can bring science to life, helping users to grasp scientific concepts, in this instance von Willebrand disease (VWD).
VWD is a blood disorder in which the blood does not clot properly. Blood contains many proteins that help the blood clot when needed. One of these proteins, von Willebrand factor (VWF), may be in low levels or does not perform as it should in patients with VWD. The VR experience educates the viewer on this using immersive graphics.
The project was part of an educational outreach campaign, with a total of 22,500 google cardboards created as part of Shire’s consumer marketing activities.
The focus of the experience is on education and adherence, aimed at young teenagers with this condition.
Using engaging virtual reality the viewer can explore the inside of a damaged blood vessel in a patient with VWD in comparison to an individual without VWD, investigating how a clot is formed to stop blood loss in healthy patients, and why a platelet plug is not formed correctly in VWD, resulting in continued bleeding.
The VR experience is colorful, eye-catching, and easy to understand, making it the perfect educational visualization tool for young adults with VWD.
An animation was also created showing how the body utilizes von Willebrand factor to form a clot, using 3D scientific visuals to educate the viewer on VWD.
