Student Internship Experience | Summer 2025
This summer, we welcomed Flora, a Biosciences student from Durham University, who joined our Sales and Marketing Team for a three-month internship. Flora dedicated her summer break to supporting the department and gaining valuable industry insights before returning to complete her final year.
In this article, Flora shares her unique perspective on her internship, highlighting the experience she gained while working closely with the Random42 team…

After completing my second year at university, I joined Random42 in June for a three-month internship within the Sales and Marketing Team. I was drawn to the role by the opportunity to see how scientific research moves beyond the lab; how it can be communicated, visualised, and brought to fruition to support the life sciences industry. Over the summer, I gained a clearer understanding of how innovation is driven within pharma and biotech, from early-stage research and drug development to the ways in which these advances are shared with different stakeholders through digital storytelling. I also developed a new appreciation for emerging technologies such as extended reality (XR) and virtual reality (VR).
From my very first week, I was immersed in the company and introduced to colleagues across multiple departments, from Marketing & Client Services to Production and the Science & Project Management Team. This introduction gave me a broad understanding of how each department contributes to Random42’s process, from the initial client interest and storyboarding to the final high-quality animations. It was great to see the start-to-finish journey of a project. I was especially grateful for how warmly I was welcomed. The openness and generosity of everyone I met made it easy to learn quickly and settle into the role.
Early in my internship, I had the opportunity to sit in on capabilities calls, which offered a fascinating insight into how Random42 presents its expertise to clients. Listening to pharmaceutical experts passionately discussing their products and their potential was a particularly memorable experience. These conversations deepened my interest in the sector and showed me how a scientific animation could be tailored to different audiences, whether for patients, healthcare professionals, or presentations at congresses and conventions. Another memorable experience from my introduction week was trialling the Apple Vision Pro headset. Being immersed in a virtual tour inside the human body and coming face-to-face with an enlarged 3D macrophage was both surreal and incredible. Viewing some of the high-quality digital work created by Random42 left me in awe of how the animators create such hyper-realistic biological structures.

A particular highlight of my internship was a research project focused on Random42’s work in the oncology sector. I reviewed and classified past projects according to their therapeutic targets, covering a wide spectrum of disease areas, from melanoma and renal cell carcinoma to breast cancer and leukaemia. This task not only demonstrated the breadth of Random42’s collaborations across oncology but also gave me the opportunity to engage with the underlying biology of these conditions. I found it especially rewarding to connect this work to my academic studies, and the project was a perfect head start for my upcoming modules in Physiology and the Biology of Disease. In addition to being a great example of how complex disease mechanisms can be translated into engaging scientific storytelling, this project also served as a great refresher on the cellular mechanisms behind these conditions. Seeing how these oncology visuals brought the science to life made me more curious about these diseases, solidifying my hope to pursue medical sciences in the future. Alongside this, a project to map pipelines across various types of drug candidates in the biotech space kept me up to date with developments in the sector. It was interesting to see the many different novel approaches and drug modalities being used to treat a spectrum of diseases.
I also had the chance to refine my data analysis skills by producing weekly website statistics reports. This involved handling large datasets in Excel and presenting the results in a clear format. Learning how to quickly organise and sort through large amounts of information was both challenging and rewarding, and I know this skill will be very helpful going forward.
On the marketing side, I was part of the Communications Team, where I gained insight into digital strategy and creative content development. I supported social media initiatives, learned the importance of SEO tools, and explored the role of LinkedIn in effective B2B marketing. One of my favourite tasks was writing a long-form industry insight article comparing different animation styles. Having arrived with little prior knowledge of motion graphics and how to create them, I found it fascinating to research, draft, and refine a piece, and then have the opportunity to build it out on the company website. Seeing the final article draft was incredibly rewarding, and I am very pleased with the result. Selecting imagery and creating a supporting LinkedIn Carousel post was another enjoyable opportunity to apply more of my creativity.

Beyond the professional experience, Random42’s culture was a true highlight. I felt part of a friendly and vibrant team and thoroughly enjoyed getting to know my colleagues at summer drinks (and making some furry friends with the office dogs too!). I also really enjoyed the other Random42 events, such as the Paws in Work masterclass on sleep hygiene and the round-robin presentations on ‘dark patterns’ in interactive apps and how to upgrade your skillset. The atmosphere within the office made a great difference to my experience, and I am especially thankful to the Sales and Marketing Team for making me feel so included from the very beginning. It was inspiring to work alongside so many interesting and talented women in STEM.
Looking back on my internship, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities I have had and the people I met. This summer has given me valuable professional skills and also reinforced my passion for scientific communication and its ability to transform how complex concepts are understood. As I return to university for my third year, I hope to carry forward the lessons I have learned at Random42 and am very excited for what lies ahead, both at Uni and beyond.
