After completing my second year at Queen Mary University of London, I joined Random42 as a Sales and Marketing intern. From the moment I arrived, the warm and friendly atmosphere set the tone for an incredible experience. I quickly saw how the company’s dynamic and collaborative culture, a testament to the talent and creativity of the team, was the engine behind their success, which was highlighted when Random42 celebrated over 400 global industry awards during my time there. I was privileged to be a part of it.

My role was significant from the start, and I soon learned the importance of high-quality, efficient work. I came to understand that a single error could have a knock-on effect, impacting subsequent tasks across the team. While mistakes are inevitable, they are also opportunities for growth. I learned to embrace them, reflect on what went wrong, and take action to refine my process.

Before this summer, my skills across different platforms were mostly foundational. This internship gave me multiple opportunities to work with unfamiliar systems, developing new and existing skills; even the tricks and shortcuts went a long way. Excel and Google Sheets were at the core of many activities I completed. I adhered to team workflows and utilised established templates to maintain highly organised, accurate, and easily accessible data repositories. In doing so, demonstrated my ability to help automate tasks to improve processes.

I had the opportunity to contribute to every stage of the client outreach process, from monitoring LinkedIn campaigns and logging prospects in our CRM to sending outreach emails and joining calls with clients. This gave me a holistic view of the sales pipeline and the importance of a smooth, efficient workflow. In particular, I worked closely with the Marketing Comms team, which gave me incredible insight into the promotion, management, and commercial growth of the company.

A major highlight was conducting deep-dive lead searches. I learned that finding the right leads is a strategic exercise in market intelligence. Navigating the corporate hierarchies of global pharmaceutical giants to identify key decision-makers was a challenge that sharpened my research and patience. Working closely with the business development team on these outreach campaigns gave me firsthand insight into how B2B marketing truly functions. Furthermore, mapping company pipelines kept me updated on relevant drugs and diseases, reinforcing my university studies and bridging the gap between drug development and marketing.

My time at Random42 also taught me two simple but profound lessons: take the initiative to problem-solve, but never hesitate to ask questions. The support of my team was unwavering, and their guidance allowed me to work with confidence. There were times when I was lost or stuck, tempted to immediately ask for help. However, in many cases, I learned the value of taking the initiative to review my own notes and resources first. Hence, I learned that the first step is always trying to find a solution myself, and the second is to never be afraid to ask for help and guidance when I need it.

Random42 Meeting

These three months represented my first real step into the professional world, my first genuine “big-boy” job. Adapting to the corporate lifestyle was a major transition; it meant trading the stereotypical teenage summer for early morning starts, structure, and a daily routine. Alongside the technical tasks, I quickly learned the unspoken rules of corporate etiquette and developed a strong professional work ethic. Immersing myself in this environment taught me invaluable life skills, the subtle details of workplace communication, collaboration, and professional conduct that you simply cannot learn in a lecture hall. What once felt like a daunting, approaching reality now feels like an exciting next step, having finally experienced the transition into the working world.

What truly made this experience so memorable were the people I met. The company’s commitment to a healthy work-life balance meant there were always opportunities to connect, whether competing at sports day, enjoying ice cream treats, or gathering for our summer party and office BBQ during the solar eclipse. These moments allowed me to build friendships that went far beyond the office walls. I quickly realised that when entering an unfamiliar environment as a newcomer, maximising your experience means stepping outside your comfort zone. At Random42, everyone is friendly and forthcoming, so putting yourself out there and making an active effort makes your time here much more enjoyable.
