After finishing my MSci in Natural Sciences at the University of Exeter, I wanted to explore careers where I could combine my scientific background with my passion for creativity, visual communication, and digital media. Random42 immediately stood out to me. After watching the showreel and exploring some of the company’s work, I was fascinated by the way complex biomedical science is transformed through animation and interactive experiences.

After securing funding through the University of Exeter’s Access to Internships scheme, I approached Random42 directly about the possibility of completing a placement. I was delighted when the team responded so warmly and offered me the opportunity to spend time with the Sales & Marketing team in London.

One of the highlights of the internship was meeting people from across the company and learning first-hand about their roles. Speaking with colleagues in Science, Project Management, Production, Interactive, and Sales & Marketing gave me a much clearer understanding of how each team contributes to a project. I also had the opportunity to join communications strategy meetings and client capabilities calls, which gave me valuable insight into the initial stages of the process. It was fascinating to see how many different areas of expertise come together, from the first conversation with a client all the way through to the finished digital experience.

A large part of my time was spent helping to prepare new case studies for the Random42 website. For each project, I explored the finished animation or interactive experience and selected moments that best represented the work. I then used Adobe Premiere Pro to turn these into eye-catching video banners, alongside creating visual mock-ups in Photoshop.

This was one of my favourite parts of the internship because it sat directly at the intersection of science and creativity. I was able to explore a wide variety of therapeutic areas, scientific concepts, and visual styles while thinking about how best to capture the story of each project in just a few clips or images. Having come from a scientific background while having always enjoyed design and visual media, I particularly valued balancing both the science being communicated and how it could be presented in an engaging way.

I also helped build and refine the case study webpages in our CMS, optimising the layout and working on their SEO. Alongside this, I supported the Communications team by creating LinkedIn posts and carousels, monitoring paid campaigns, and learning more about the evolving digital landscape.

The people made the experience particularly memorable. Everyone was incredibly welcoming, whether I was asking about their work, chatting in the kitchen, joining a table football game, or spending time on the sunny roof terrace. Being able to walk to the office each morning also meant I got to know Marylebone and the local area, including plenty of lunchtime exploring and a particularly good sweet chilli chicken sandwich from a local bakery.

There were some less expected highlights too, including taking part in photos and videos for Random42’s new digital brochure, and making the most of a visit from a charity gelato cart supporting Médecins Sans Frontières.

I am incredibly grateful to everyone at Random42 for making me feel so welcome and giving me the opportunity to experience so many aspects of the company. The month gave me a much better understanding of medical and scientific communication and showed me just how naturally science and creativity can work together.
