The Role of a Lead Interactive Developer: A Conversation with David Ball

16th July 2026 Industry Insights

“For me, an immersive developer is far more than a programmer. They are someone who seeks a deep understanding of requirements and delivers value using innovation, creativity, and technical expertise. We live at the crossroads between art and technology. It’s about so much more than lines of code.”

This philosophy lies at the heart of David’s role as Lead Interactive Developer at Random42. As part of the company’s immersive team, David plays a pivotal role in shaping innovative interactive experiences, from extended reality (XR) to touchscreens and apps, that communicate complex scientific stories in memorable, engaging ways. With a background that spans computer science, entrepreneurship, and cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) development, David’s career reflects a consistent pursuit of exploration, creativity, and purpose.

From Computer Science to Scientific Storytelling: David’s Career Journey

David’s journey into the world of interactive science communication began in Scotland, where he discovered a world of possibilities while experimenting on the family PC. He studied computer science at Edinburgh and Glasgow University. After completing a master’s degree, he pivoted into the emerging field of VR. That path eventually led him to Random42, where he has worked for the past six years.

“Random42 attracted me as an opportunity to work with an incredibly talented team of 3D artists and scientists, all while giving me the push to the frontier of immersive scientific visualization.” Now leading a team of developers, he brings together creativity, empathy, and technical acumen to build immersive tools that transform how science is communicated.

Inside the Role: Building Interactive Experiences with Purpose

As the head of the immersive team, David’s day-to-day work involves managing project delivery, aligning creative and technical goals, and ensuring the team has everything they need to succeed. He collaborates closely with both internal stakeholders and clients, turning complex scientific objectives into technically sound, user-friendly experiences.

“The most fun part of my job is contributing to the continuous expansion of our interactive capabilities and pursuit of quality,” he explains. From programming the inner workings of apps with C# and C++ to working with platforms like Unity3D and Unreal Engine, David stays hands-on with technology while mentoring a growing team of talented engineers.

One recent standout project? A unique sensory VR kayaking experience that combines scientific education and nature to engage users at live events. “Experiences like this require a lot of creativity, trust, planning, and expertise; however, the results can be phenomenal.”

Cultivating Innovation: Developing Interactive Experiences

“While I’ve never stopped being a developer who loves to solve problems, I find meaning in working within a culture where people naturally flourish, and where enthusiasm and great ideas lead the way.” It is this very culture that shapes Random42’s approach to immersive development, including the introduction of visual planning tools such as app wireframes and mock-ups that have been essential for unlocking collaboration opportunities with our clients and partners.

As technology evolves, so too does David’s vision. “I see the quality standards for our immersive experiences increasing due to advances in hardware, but also thanks to investments in our in-house tools as well as refinement to existing approaches.”

The Power of Collaboration: Supporting Creative Teams

In his role, he embraces a culture of collaboration. “You absolutely need to agree on a core vision and objectives, but a lot of the job is to get out of the way and let people find their own optimums and ways to excel.” His goal is to empower team members not just as developers, but as empathetic problem-solvers who understand the ‘why’ behind every project.

David also encourages early-career developers to focus on structured, foundational learning, especially in an age where overreliance on “no-code” tools and AI is increasingly having an impact on developers’ learning. “My advice to anyone getting into development is to think carefully about how they’re acquiring those skills. You never stop learning as a developer, so it’s best to adopt good habits from the start.”

Beyond the Code: David’s Hobbies & Passions

Outside of work, David finds balance in nature and community. He enjoys hiking, orienteering, and organizing events at his local tennis club, where he’s known for a popular tournament scheduling app he created. A gamer and game developer himself, he draws creative parallels between gaming and interactive storytelling in the scientific space.

David’s journey at Random42 is a testament to the power of blending shared understanding with innovation. By working collectively, David and his fellow developers continually push the boundaries of immersive tech, helping Random42 redefine what interactive storytelling looks like in the scientific world.

“I believe care, craftsmanship, and empathy are the underlying values that make great interactive developers. I’m proud to see those values shining through in the team’s incredible work.”
