Geographic Atrophy MoD Animation

The Objective

Educating healthcare professionals (HCPs) on the complex, often invisible disease process of Geographic Atrophy (GA) was the primary objective for Apellis Pharmaceuticals. As a late-stage of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the focus was on the damaging complement cascade that occurs in pre-lesions—areas outside the visible lesion where the next wave of cellular destruction begins.

To bring this intricate scientific story to life, our goal was to create a compelling mechanism of disease (MoD) animation, ensuring an engaging and effective educational experience.

Visualizing the Science

To make the science memorable and understandable, we developed a creative approach themed around ‘Earth.’ The animation blends two distinct worlds: a metaphorical “macro” world showing decaying and healthy landmasses, and a detailed, high-science molecular “micro” world.

This “micro” world focuses on the C3 protein and demonstrates how its targeting can interrupt the complement pathways understood to cause GA. To enhance engagement and aid recognition, key proteins and cells were given distinct personalities and defining movement traits, translating complex biological interactions into a clear visual narrative.

The Application

The final MoD animation is featured on Apellis’ disease education website. Its aesthetic is cohesive with the site and related materials, creating a unified experience for HCPs.

Furthermore, imagery from the animation was provided as part of our complimentary visual toolkit. These assets have been leveraged across the site, ensuring a consistent and engaging visual language that reinforces the scientific story.
